What were seafarers quaffing below decks during the golden age of sailing? Which fruity distillation was a favorite at George and Martha Washington’s wedding? And what drink is widely considered the forerunner of all modern cocktails? You’ll learn the answers to these questions and more as you journey through the spirited history of American cocktails in this live online class with expert mixologist Kathleen Denecke. Roll up your sleeves to craft drinks that are steeped in days of yore, discover how these classics shaped the world of mixology, and learn practical tips on perfecting each concoction as you connect with enthusiasts who share your passion for historical discovery—and delicious drinks.

  • Delve into the historical context of grog, the cherry bounce, and the old fashioned, and explore each cocktail’s unique significance in American culture.
  • Engage in a hands-on cocktail crafting session where you’ll re-create these historic beverages and learn how they were first made and enjoyed centuries ago.
  • Discover how these classic recipes have evolved over time and how to update them with different spirits and modern twists.
  • Gain insights into cocktail customization and how to adjust recipes to match your own preferences and tastes.
Class length: 60 minutes.
We suggest: Because mixology and gastronomy complement each other so well, you can make this experience even more captivating by adding our Six-Month Recipes by Mail Subscription to your gift of this class. Each month, your giftee will receive by mail a real recipe handwritten by a historical figure, such as George Washington or Rosa Parks. Each recipe is meticulously reproduced from the original with attention to period detail and accompanied by context pages that share the writer’s history and the story behind the recipe.
